Condoms began to fly once Vince J. Aguon started his photoshoot for this LGBTQ feature.
No, he wasn’t just coming over-prepared. By trade, Vince is communicable disease control
coordinator at the Department of Public Health and Social Services Division of Public
Health, Bureau of Communicable Disease Control. There, he provides STD/HIV testing,
makes referral and partner services to priority populations including men who have sex
with men (not necessarily gay men), those who inject drugs, etc. He also serves on DPHSS’s
Quality Improvement Council and the Guam HIV Planning Group.
It’s no wonder condoms came flying out as he riffled through his bag for his business card.
Vince is also a member of the LGBTQ community, a gay man, if you’re keeping score, who
isn’t too interested in labels.
“I identify as human,” he says with a smiley emoticon attached. “With respect to my job, it
just happened to be incidental. Among many other things I’m passionate about (food,
travel, etc.) I am passionate about working with people, especially regarding a topic that
not everyone is so open to discuss (safer sex, condoms, etc.). I believe that every one of us
has been blessed with our very own unique characteristics… find out what you’re
passionate about, and make that your contribution to society. Whether you’re gay or
straight, I’m sure there are many people with the same outlook on life.”
