Flagship Killer

June 29, 2017 Staff Writer

Samsung’s latest flagship smart phone, the Galaxy S8 (and its bigger brother, the S8 Plus) has gotten near-universal acclaim for its stunning looks, brilliant display, huge power, and great camera. It’s also quite expensive, in fact, one of the most expensive in the market now, with an unlocked model priced at $724.99. You’re definitely paying a premium for a premium product that, unfortunately, still has a few things going against it (like the unfortunately placed fingerprint reader, for one).

Certainly, the S8 is only for those with cash to burn, but it doesn’t mean the rest of us will have to settle for mediocre phones whose only claim to fame is their affordability. If the rumors and leaks turn out to be accurate, we might be able to get our hands on a flagship phone that won’t cost us an arm and a leg.

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus, like its compatriot Xiaomi, has successfully penetrated the industry dominated by Apple and Samsung by offering less-expensive handsets with specs comparable to those of the high-end competition. Their OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T have been a success not only in China but in other parts of the world, offering premium features and costing less than $500.

In the heels of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 comes OnePlus 5, which is already being dubbed the “flagship killer.” And for good reason: It’s priced like a mid-range device, but has key features that rival those of the S8:

The OnePlus 5 is expected to have a curved, 5.5-inch display with 2K resolution. Just like the S8, it will also eliminate most of the front bezel.

Reportedly, Samsung has gotten its hands on the whole line of Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processors, so OnePlus has settled on the next best thing, which is the Snapdragon 830, which like the 835, is a 10nm-technology-based processor.

How does a 23-MP camera sound? Double it and endow it with a bokeh effect, and that’s what the OnePlus 5 is offering for better imaging and performance.

Instead of aluminum or glass, the OnePlus 5 will have a special ceramic body complemented by glass and aluminum design elements for a truly premium look and feel.

Out of the box, the OnePlus 5 will have Google’s latest OS, Android 7.0 – Nougat, 8GB of RAM, 64 to 256GB of storage, and USB-type C port.

For those who may have noticed why OnePlus skipped a number when it named its latest gadget (from 3 to 5), it’s because the Chinese deem the number 4 unlucky.
